ای دوست من! آنچه از من برای تو نمایان می شود، نیستم.

ظاهرم چیزی نیست جز لباسی که از نخلهای تساهل و نیکی با دقت بافته شده است تا مرا از دخالتهای بیجای تو و تو را از کوتاهی و غفلت من محافظت کند.

و اما آن ذات بزرگ و پنهان که او را "من" می خوانمش، راز ناشناخته ایست که در اعماق درونم جای دارد و کسی جز من آن را درک نتواند کرد و در آنجا برای همیشه ناشناخته و پنهان خواهد ماند.

دوست من! نمی خواهم تمام سخنان و کردارم را باور کنی زیرا سخنان من چیزی نیست جز پژواک اندیشه های تو و کردارم نیز جز سایه های آرزوهای تو!

دوست من! اگر بگویی باد به سوی مشرق می وزد، فی الفور پاسخت دهم که: آری! به سوی مشرق می وزد زیرا نمی خواهم گمان ببری افکار شناور من با امواج دریا نمی تواند همراه باد به وزش و پرواز درآید در حالی که بادها تار و پود فرسوده ی افکار قدیمی ات را از هم گسیخت و آن را متلاشی کرد و دیگر نمی توانی افکار عمیق مرا که بر دریاها در حال اهتزاز است، درک کنی. من هم نمی خواهم تو آن را دریابی زیرا دوست دارم در دریا به تنهایی سیر کنی.

دوست من! چون خورشید روز تو طلوع کند، تاریکی شب بر من فرا می رسد. با اینحال از پشت حجابهای تاریکم درباره پرتوهای طلایی خورشید سخن می گویم چون در هنگام ظهر بر قله کوهها و بر فراز تپه ها به رقص در می آید و در هنگام رقص از ظلمات و تاریکی دره ها و دشتها خبر می دهد.

در این باره با تو سخن خواهم گفت زیرا تو نمی توانی سرودهای شبانه ام بشنوی و بالهای مرا در میان ستارگان نمی بینی و چه خوب است که تو آن را نمی شنوی و نمی بینی زیرا دوست دارم در تنهایی شب زنده داری کنم.

دوست من! وقتی تو به آسمانت صعود می کنی، من به سوی دوزخ خود سرازیر می شوم و با اینکه رود صعب العبوری در میان ما قرار می گیرد اما یکدیگر را صدا می زنیم و دیگری را دوست خطاب می کنیم.

من نمی خواهم تو دوزخ مرا ببینی زیرا شعله هایش دیدگانت را می سوزاند و دود آن بینی تو را می آزارد.

من نمیخواهم تو دوزخ مرا ببینی و بهتر است که من در دوزخ خود تنها باشم.

دوست من! تو می گویی حقیقت و پاکدامنی و زیبایی را سخت دوست داری و من به خاطر تو می گویم:
شایسته است که انسان چنین صفاتی را دوست بدارد درحالی که در دل خود به تو می خندم و خنده خود را کتمان می کنم زیرا می خواهم تنها بخندم.

دوست من! تو نه تنها انسانی درخور ستایش، هوشیار و فرزانه هستی بلکه یک انسان کامل بشمار می روی اما من دیوانه ای بیش نیستم که از عالم عجیب و غریب تو دور هستم. من دیوانگی خود را مخفی می کنم زیرا دوست دارم در عالم جنون نیز تنها باشم.
